About Stout Roofing

Over 40 years of trusted roofing in Seattle

Our Story

After several years of hand-nailing composition shingle and cedar shake roofs for a high-end roofing company, in 1983 Jake started out on his own with an old F-150, a tool belt, roofer's hatchet and a nail stripper with a simple belief: that every homeowner deserves honest work at a fair price. That philosophy has remained true for over 40 years.

What began as a one-man operation has grown into one of the most trusted roofing companies in the Northwest. Over four decades, Stout Roofing has expanded from that single truck to a full team of skilled professionals — roofers, project managers, and office staff — all sharing Jake's commitment to quality workmanship at a competitive price.

Through rain-soaked Seattle winters and sun-drenched summers, through economic booms and recessions, 9-11 and the pandemic, one thing has never changed: our dedication to quality craftmanship and treating every customer like a neighbor. We don't cut corners, we don't upsell you what you don't need, and we won't ply you with misinformation. If we don't know the answer to your question, we will tell you so, and we will find someone who does. We have two generations of experts at all the major roofing manufacturers and suppliers who are ready to help address your concerns.

Stout Roofing is unusual. We are one of the few roofing companies that can boast repeat customers.

Today, with more than 15,000 roofs completed across the Puget Sound region, Stout Roofing remains one of the oldest family-owned and operated roofing companies. We've earned our reputation one roof at a time, and we plan to keep it that way for another 40 years.

Our Team

All our crew leaders have years of experience in the industry, and most have been with us over 10 years. Our office manager, Amanda Anderson, is a born and bred Brit who will take care of all your needs. She is well-reviewed by our clients even though she can't spell "colour" correctly and continues to do so intentionally!

We have established a solid network of hundreds of Real Estate Pros who depend on us every week for objective and reliable assessments of their clients' roofs. For our own clients, we will also get you an honest evaluation of your roof's condition and lifespan. If you can get another few years from your current roof, we will tell you so, and what you might do to extend its life. We have been doing this for 40 years. We can wait for your business by establishing trust.

We will listen to your needs and get you the information you need to make a big decision such as re-roofing your house or building. We will not sell you something you do not need or want.

What We Stand For

The principles that have guided us for over 40 years

  • Quality Craftsmanship

Every nail, every shingle, every detail matters. We build roofs that last because we never cut corners on materials or workmanship.

  • Honest Communication

We tell you what your roof actually needs — not what makes us the most money. Straight talk, clear timelines, no surprises.

  • Fair Pricing

Competitive rates without hidden fees. We provide detailed written estimates so you know exactly what you're paying for.

  • Community First

We live and work in the communities we serve. Your neighbors are our neighbors, and their trust means everything to us.

Meet Jake

After attending WSU for two years, Jake transferred to and graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Environmental Studies and Geography in 1978, and a Master's in Communication in Digital Media in 2013. His most influential course was "Quaternary Studies" taught by Estella Leopold — Aldo Leopold's daughter.

Jake pioneered roof recycling in the Northwest and was the first to promote environmentally safe roof preservative treatments for cedar roofs. Working with the WA Department of Transportation to initiate the recycling of composition shingles into asphalt road base, his efforts were endorsed by Governor Booth Gardner.

In the past, Jake owned two cedar shake mills which produced quality cedar shingles and shakes for our clients. One was based in Snohomish and another in Nanaimo, BC. Both eventually closed due to the lack of old growth salvage cedar and the transition to better quality composition shingles and other alternatives.

Jake is a Certainteed roofing "Wizzard", passing the ShingleMaster test on the first try. According to Certainteed, the award is prestigious and rare.

Jake founded Stout Roofing in 1983 with a hands-on approach that hasn't changed in four decades. He still personally oversees every major project, conducts inspections, and meets with homeowners to discuss their roofing needs. Every client gets Jake's cell number.

With over 40 years of experience on Seattle-area roofs, Jake has seen every type of roofing challenge. From moss-covered cedar shakes in Woodinville to wind-damaged shingles in North Bend, his expertise is built on real-world experience — not textbooks.

"Every roof tells a story. We make sure yours is one of quality and craftsmanship that lasts for decades."

— Jake, Owner of Stout Roofing
